Agnes Veski

Silver Jewellery From an Estonian Goldsmith With a Quiet Obsession With Moss.

Right. So Agnes Veski is a young Estonian goldsmith — born in 1994, Tallinn-trained at the Estonian Academy of Arts, where she graduated in jewellery and blacksmithing in 2017 — who set up her own studio in 2018 and has spent the years since making properly lovely silver pieces drawn from the very particular landscapes of Estonia and the wider Nordic world. She did a study exchange in Gothenburg during her degree, then stayed on afterwards to work as a freelance jeweller in the city, which presumably accounts for the slightly Swedish minimalism that runs through everything she now makes. The work itself, however, is properly Estonian — informed by Estonian forests, mosses, birches, and the sort of wild flora one tends to encounter quietly underfoot rather than displayed in a botanical garden.

Pieces are made in 925 sterling silver, finished by hand, and the studio's distinguishing trick is the way it pairs traditional goldsmithing techniques with what Agnes describes as unexpected metal-processing technologies — which, in practice, means small unusual surface treatments that lift a remarkable amount of organic texture out of the metal without sacrificing precision. The catalogue is organised by collection, each named in Estonian and properly themed: MOSSI takes its cue from the fragile architecture of forest moss (some pieces incorporating moss agate stones, which is an exceptionally satisfying bit of material wit); KÕIV is the Estonian word for birch, and the line carries the bark and twig forms one would hope for; METSIKUD translates roughly as "wild ones" and is the more cheerful, slightly wittier sibling of the rest of the studio; and the SPRING series — leaves, petals, the green-shoot brightness of late April — is the one to give to anyone who ought to be cheered up. Every piece is handcrafted in Estonia, made to order (typically two to three weeks of production), and arrives in a small gift box, which never hurts.
