Usva Cosmetics is a small family-run skincare business in Lohja, a town not far from Helsinki, doing something slightly unusual for a Nordic natural cosmetics brand: they don't limit themselves to Nordic ingredients. The range is built around a deliberate pairing of plants from contrasting climates — northern berries and herbs from the Arctic Circle alongside rainforest oils and botanicals from the tropics, with the occasional East Asian ingredient drafted in for good measure. The argument, broadly, is that plants grown in very different conditions develop very different protective compounds, and combining them in a single formulation produces a more complete piece of skincare than any one climate could manage on its own. It is the kind of thinking you tend to get from people who have read rather more about phytochemistry than the cosmetics industry strictly requires.

Everything is handmade in small batches in Finland, free from preservatives, synthetic dyes, sulfates, and the usual cast of additives that natural-cosmetics brands keep finding new ways to leave out. The line meets standards stricter than many of the certifications it would be eligible for — these are formulations that sit slightly beyond the logos rather than just inside them. Hero products include the Soft Glow exfoliant, named Best Exfoliant by Finland's Eeva magazine last year, the Wild Fruit Oil Serum (built around cold-pressed rare fruit oils with one of the richest natural sources of beta-carotene in the world), and a balm-to-milk cleanser that removes makeup without disturbing the skin's microbiome. For every product sold — lip balms aside — Usva plants a tree, which is the kind of commitment that, distinct from the marketing-friendly version of the same idea, gets paid in actual saplings.
